There is a rule on Antarctica, not unlike other places in the world where wildlife roams free. Do not touch or feed. That said, if a penguin approaches you, it’s up to the penguin what happens next. This one started toward me as I lay on the guano-covered rocks. It forced me from a long lens to short lens as carefully and quietly as I possibly could. And then this penguin pecked at my pant leg. It was a crazy, surrealistic moment. The penguin feeling no threat from me had come around to investigate, and then before toddling off, turned and gave me a quick glance. I went back to the ship later that day filled with happiness. Respect for nature paid off again. A connection made in the place I least expected. So thankful for moments like that! So hard to get guano off your Goretex.
