Guestbook Earth
In the hours before we closed our cottage for the summer, I sat at the lake edge thinking about all the fun we’d had with our friends and family. “I should read the guestbook” I thought, and see what people have said, and maybe I should sign it too, after all, the cottage will long survive me, so in a way I too am a guest.
I contemplated how fortunate I am to see the things I see and live the experiences I live. I am so lucky to be aware of what I encounter when so many people drift through their days unaware, focused on the noise that’s so persistent today. In fact, I wish I could sign a guest book for the planet and share what I’ve seen, and in my way say “thank you”.
That’s what this blog is about. Guestbook Earth is my way of sharing, for no other reason than to say thank you to the world for all it offers while I am here. I hope that eventually, people will hear of this and send me pictures and stories that have made them happy and appreciative. At a time when the planet is under siege in so many respects, there is still much to marvel at.
Guestbook Earth, South Africa
At best, January in particular can seem miserable in the suburbs of big northern cities. The colourful lights of the holiday season have been dimmed, snow if there is any, is slowly turning grey with slush, trees are bare and the days short. Is there any wonder why...
Guestbook Earth, Canada
Hello 2019, wow you got here fast! The new year always seems to represent hope and the promise of better things to come. I took this picture of my daughter and her friend many years ago. Pointing to the future, under a wonderful, windswept tree on the rocky shore of...

I love to travel. I love exploring unspoiled places and urban landscapes that offer a fresh perspective. It’s good for me. It stokes my creative juices and stretches my mind. I enjoy meeting people from around the world who welcome me and my family with the same pride...
Guestbook Earth, Greenland
A massive mural of diamonds, topaz and sapphires confronted our minuscule zodiacs. There was nothing to do but sit in silent fascination at the wonders of this planet that we too often take for granted. How these things existed in the world outside my suburban home...
Guestbook Earth, Canada
What inspires you? What makes you so happy that you feel compelled to share that feeling? For me it’s moments like this. A quiet early morning in Ontario’s Killarney Park. It’s a moment that for me goes well beyond just a pretty picture. It’s how the quiet sounded,...
Guestbook Earth, Canada
And then there are mistakes gone right! I was shooting on Lake Ontario early one morning, apparently before I’d had my coffee. I forgot to change the settings on camera from the night before. This was in the days of film when there was no opportunity to review your...
Guestbook Earth, South Africa
This wasn’t what it looked like. I am not a hunter, nor is the guy with the rifle. We were on a photography trip in South Africa’s Kruger Park and part of one of our excursions was on foot. Despite keeping our distance and being absolutely sure not to upset or...
Guestbook Earth, Canada
I took this picture a while ago while traveling through Canada’s Atlantic provinces, in Halifax to be exact. A jammed canon? Let's take a look. Darwinism at work? Originally, I thought it was just a funny moment. Today I see it as a metaphor for climate change.

In the entrance of the first big ad agency I worked for, on the wall, was the one expression that has challenged me more than anything else in my career. It was attributed to Ray Rubicam and it simply said “Resist The Usual”. If you take that to heart, really take...
Guestbook Earth, Tunisia
The Sahara. There aren’t many more geographical terms that fill the pallet of the imagination as quickly as “Sahara” does. From movies to books, the idea of the Sahara Desert spans romance and history. It is all at once enchanting, threatening and deadly. No matter...
Guestbook Earth, Namibia
A storm was kicking up. The Namibian desert was morphing from a quiet panorama of dunes and valleys, to a vista alive with motion. This couple were determine to climb famous Dune 45 not to far from Sossusvlei. I was so thankful to be there and capture the moment, even...
Guestbook Earth, Canada
Over the years I’ve watched many sunrises and no two are alike. I’m not sure why they are so compelling but they are. I suppose in some existential way they remind us of endings, which almost always seem more dramatic than beginnings. They go beyond pointing out or...
Guestbook Earth, Canada
The simplest things in life can often be the most spectacular. It has been through the viewfinder of my camera that I learned to look for them and see them. A simple dandelion backlit by the sun appears the be an explosion of light. So thankful for the chance to be...
Guestbook Earth, South Africa
Sometimes, capturing a moment can just be fun! No deeper meaning, no sub-text, no lesson, just fun! I captured this picture while traveling from Cape Town to port Elizabeth. I had stopped at an Ostrich farm to see what it was all about. I had no idea that people raced...
Guestbook Earth, Antarctica
Crossing the Drake Straight was a nightmare. Of the 100-ish passengers onboard our old exploration vessel, only three or four of us avoided sea sickness as we were tossed front to back and side to side in the massive waves, over two days, without a break. But then, as...
Guestbook Earth, South Africa
“We need to back out of here” said my guide as the leopard we’d been searching for all day, now approached our car. “She’ll have us hanging from a tree before you know it” he said as he gunned the engine to try and scare her off… to no avail. I got a few pics off...
Guestbook Earth, USA
Every morning this man would go for a float in the pool where we stayed. After a while I marvelled at the commitment to his routine and his ability to stay afloat for as long as he did – I am pretty much a rock! One morning coming back from a run, I saw him going...

Protecting, caring and loving our children is not only the domain of humans, in fact most people act to the contrary when you consider the environmental mess we will leave for our children and theirs to follow. No animal has done as much harm to the planet as we...
Guestbook Earth, Churchill, Canada
This mom and her cub are waiting for the sea ice just off Cape Churchill to freeze so they can head out in search of the food that will sustain them over the next year. We humans have created an environment where the sea ice is less available every year – that is a...
Guestbook Earth, New Zealand
This is a view of Queenstown, New Zealand from atop the Ben Lomond Saddle. The diversity of landscape and terrain down there is astonishing. So much within such a relatively small area. To see that blend of mountains, seascapes, meadows, farms, snow and beach you’d...
