Guestbook Earth
In the hours before we closed our cottage for the summer, I sat at the lake edge thinking about all the fun we’d had with our friends and family. “I should read the guestbook” I thought, and see what people have said, and maybe I should sign it too, after all, the cottage will long survive me, so in a way I too am a guest.
I contemplated how fortunate I am to see the things I see and live the experiences I live. I am so lucky to be aware of what I encounter when so many people drift through their days unaware, focused on the noise that’s so persistent today. In fact, I wish I could sign a guest book for the planet and share what I’ve seen, and in my way say “thank you”.
That’s what this blog is about. Guestbook Earth is my way of sharing, for no other reason than to say thank you to the world for all it offers while I am here. I hope that eventually, people will hear of this and send me pictures and stories that have made them happy and appreciative. At a time when the planet is under siege in so many respects, there is still much to marvel at.

Everything fits in Porto. I made this picture from atop the Dom Louis I bridge. The bridge itself is magnificent. But the views from high offer a crazy perspective of Porto. In this picture the camera helps me distort and design the view. It almost looks like the road...
Guestbookearth, Greenland
Years ago, I travelled on a small ship from Greenland across the bumpy Davis Straight to Canada. Before the crossing we had a few peaceful days along the Greenlandic coast to visit small communities and experience a coastline maybe unmatched by its diverse geography...

A rare occurrence anywhere is a sun pillar, or light pillar. This one was spectacular. It was so strong it looked like an explosion bursting out of the earth. They are typically seen during sunrise or sunset, when sunlight reflects off falling ice crystals. This one...
Guestbook Earth, South Africa
Years ago, when we worked with real rolls of film and Cokin filters, and when there was no quick review of an image on the back of your camera, I made this picture. I had traveled to Kruger Park in South Africa for my first of what became a few, safari experiences. I...
Guestbook Earth, Florida
I love watching pelicans. They are majestic. Silent. They seem so mature and grown up… come to think of it, I can’t recall ever seeing young ones. I like to watch them glide swiftly over a still Gulf of Mexico, so close to the water that there is a mirror reflection....
Guestbook Earth, Portugal
What a great year it’s been. Unplanned, I’ve spent most of it by bodies of water with incredible sunsets, meteor showers, storms and wildlife. I’ve watched the shape of a shoreline morph in the face of waves and winds that have power beyond what most people might...
