Where to start? My father was a survivor of Bergen Belsen and other camps during WW2. His family mostly escaped unharmed. Like many people, I still struggle to understand the scope of the horrors. But no matter how well, or little I think I understand, I believe that awareness and never forgetting the atrocities of that time and those of today, is essential if we have any chance of evolving as a human race. This is one section of the new Holocaust Memorial in Amsterdam. Each brick has the name of someone who perished during that time. There were columns of bricks engraved with my family’s surname.
